Hello from the Agro-eco Project Team

Hello friends,

This is the first blog post from the team here at the Agro-Eco Project in Rutland MA. We are a group of three passionate individuals running a small not-for profit vegetable farm.

Our first aim is to grow food for our local food pantries. We regularly donate to the Rutland and Watchussett food pantries as well as to St. John's Food for the Poor program in Worcester. Our most important goal is to get fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers to those who need it most in our community.

Our second aim is to use our farm as a test site for agroecological farming techniques. Put simply, agroecology approaches food production through the lens of ecology. Managing food systems ecologically means that we farm in accordance with the rules of nature as opposed to the imperative of maximizing yield and profit. Our aim is to prove the idea that one can farm without harming humans, wildlife or the environment AND be a productive farm at the same time.

Our third aim is to explore the links between growing food ecologically and cooking delicious food. We plant heritage varieties of plants and fruit with the goal of highlighting their culinary, cultural and nutritional value. We will be holding a series of cooking demos as soon as conditions allow us to so please make sure to check out our Events page.

We look forward to serving our community and acting as an educational hub for all things agroecology.
